The CAVD DataSpace (CDS) data portal is a custom project developed by LabKey and the Statistical Center for HIV/ AIDS Research and Prevention (SCHARP) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch). The goal is to help researchers gain new insights from completed studies, making integrated data from all studies available within a web-based interface for browsing. Within the DataSpace application, use the Plot data page to create box and scatter plots. You can also reach this page via the "Explore Relationships" option from the home page.

Choose variables to plot, make selections directly on the plot to subgroup and filter, use subgroups for further comparison.

Choose Variables

Click Choose Variable for each axis to open a dialogue box for selecting what to plot. "Recommended" characteristics are listed above a full listing of all characteristics available. Here we are setting the variable for the y-axis and selected ICS. 'Magnitude - Background subtracted' is recommended, additional options are listed in the top scroll panel. The lower scroll panel shows the assay dimensions you can set.

Click Set y-axis to begin your plot. Next click Choose variable for the X axis to set it.

Time Points and Alignment

You can select various sources on the x-axis panel, one of which is Time points. With time points, you can choose days (recommended), weeks, or months, and also have some advanced options:
  • Axis type:
    • Continuous: Visits/events are shown along a continuous date-based timeline
    • Categorical: Visits/events are shown an equal distance apart. Such discrete time variables focus a plot on the sequence of events, regardless of elapsed time between them.
  • Aligned by:
    • Aligned by Day 0: Multiple studies in the plot are aligned by start date of the study.
    • Enrollment: Alignment is by enrollment date.
    • First Vaccination: Alignment is by the date of first vaccination.
    • Last Vaccination: Alignment is by the date of last vaccination.
This sample plot shows studies aligned by first vaccination, using a categorical axis in months.

Use Color and Shape

A third plotting variable is available by clicking the Color variable selector. The variable you choose will determine the color and shape of each point. Hover over the legend to see the definitions of the colors and shapes.

Study Axis and Tooltips

Below the data plot is the Study Axis showing icons on a timeline matching the X-axis for the plot. Each row represents a study with data represented. Hover over an icon on the study axis for a tooltip with more details. The relevant points on the data grid are colored green while you hover. Click to make that relevant data into an active filter.

Tooltips are also available for points within the data plot and provide additional information. Click a datapoint to see the values that went into that point, for both x and y axes, including the median value for aggregated variables.

Heatmaps

When the plot contains too many dots to show interactively, the plot is shown as a heatmap. Higher data density is represented by darker tones. If you hover over a square, the number of points represented will be displayed. Clicking a square gives a tooltip about the data represented. You must reduce the amount of data plotted to see points again.

Make Selections from the Plot

Click and drag through the plot itself to highlight a subset of data. Notice the points are marked in green, the axes show the ranges you have selected and a filter panel appears on the right. Click to make that selection an active filter; you can also save as a subgroup.

Save a Plot

Once you have created the plot you can save it by clicking Save next to Active Filters. Saving the plot as part of a group will display it on the group details page. Remember that a saved 'group' is really a set of saved filters to apply to the data. Similarly a plot saved with a group will give a quick visualization of the filtered data.
