Some assays use plate-based technologies where spots or beads of a sample are arrayed across a fixed size plate and read by an instrument. Wells in the plate, typically referred to by column and row, contain different dilutions or combinations of elements and data is recorded by well. Creating an assay design for a plate-based technology includes the creation of one or more plate templates to the assay design process outlined in Design a New Assay.

When you create an assay design, you choose the assay type up front and then can customize a specific design to match your experiment data. The Standard assay type can be customized to interpret plate-based data and associate it with well information.
