Sometimes the sequence for a nucleotide or protein isn't known at the time of registration. Unidentified sequence registration lets you create a registry entry without sequence data so that related work can move forward. The sequence can be added later.

Registering Without a Sequence

Both nucleotide sequences (NS) and protein sequences (PS) can be registered as unidentified. During registration, select Sequence is unknown to skip entering the sequence now. The system will indicate that the record is unidentified and let you continue.

For a protein sequence, you can optionally connect it to an unidentified nucleotide sequence at the same time. Neither record requires sequence data to proceed.

When no sequence is provided:

  • Properties will not be automatically calculated.
  • The chain format will not be automatically calculated.
  • Annotations cannot be added.
  • You can fill in any known property values manually.

Adding a Sequence After Registration

Once the sequence has been determined, you can add it to the existing record.

  • Open the record and go to the Sequence tab on the details page.
  • If no nucleotide sequence is associated, you can select an existing NS or paste in the protein sequence directly.
  • If an unidentified NS was used at registration, keep the NS association and translate the NS sequence to identify the protein sequence.
If you entered property values manually before adding a sequence, LabKey will update those fields based on the sequence provided. This change is recorded in the audit log.

Unidentified Records in the UI

Unidentified records are marked throughout the application.

In grid views:

  • The Sequence column is blank for records without a sequence.
  • An Identified column shows true or false. Use this to filter for records that still need a sequence.
In details and lineage views:
  • An Unidentified tag appears next to the Registry ID.
  • The tag is removed automatically once a sequence is added.

Audit Log

When a record moves between unidentified and identified states, the change is captured in the registry audit log. Look for IDENTIFIED or UNIDENTIFIED in the Registry Event Type field.
