Experiments Overview

The Experiments page lets you connect samples with an experiment, and the data resulting from that experiment.

Navigate to the "Experiments" page from the landing-page navigation box.

Clicking "Experiments" brings you to a listing of the experiments in the system.

Clicking a particular experiment brings you to a detailed view.

The Overview sub-tab shows the start date, end date, and the sample used in the experiment.

The Assays sub-tab shows the assay data for the samples that have been included in the experiment.

There is a tab for each type of assay run on the samples.

Any additional assay data added for these samples will show up here.

The Files sub-tab lets you attach files to the experiment. For example, you might attach published articles, applicable SOPs, external datasets or analysis or image files to provide context and/or analysis of what occurred in the experiment.

Create a New Experiment

Experiments can be created from the Samples grid using the Add to Experiment button, which becomes enabled once you select a number of samples.

After selecting the desired sample and clicking Add to Experiment, click the New Experiment tab. Enter a name and description for the experiment. If you do not supply a name, one will be generated using the default naming pattern LB-${genId}. (Administrators can change this naming pattern by updating the entry for the "_default" type in the labbook.LabBookExperimentType table.)

Clicking "Create Experiment" navigates you back to the Samples grid with a notification about the newly created sample.

Clicking the View Experiment link in this notification bar brings you to the details page for the experiment, showing the name, description, start date, end date and creation/modification info as well as the grid of samples.

Click Add to Experiment.

You are navigated back to the Samples grid, with a banner notification about the additional samples.

From the details page for an experiment, you can edit the name, description, start date and end date, as well delete the experiment.

Click the edit icon next to the item you wish to change.

To delete an entire experiment, click the Delete button in the upper right.

When you delete the experiment, you will be shown a confirmation dialog

If you confirm the deletion, you will be taken to the Experiments grid page where a success message will be displayed.

If the deletion fails, you will stay on the Details page and an error banner will be shown there.

Experiment Administration

Administrators can control the main Experiments grid view by modifying the query labbook.LabBookExperiment. To find that query: in the query browser, navigate to labbook.LabBookExperiment, then click View Data. Select (Grid views) > Customize Grid. Select which fields you wish to display by placing checkmarks next to them in the Available Fields panel. Save the grid view as the default view (and share it with all users).

Administrators can access the tables in the labbook schema through the usual LabKey APIs for inserting and updating data, as well as the LabKey Query Browser UI.
