Some assays use plate-based technologies where spots or beads of a sample are arrayed across a fixed size plate and read by an instrument. Wells in the plate, typically referred to by column and row, contain different dilutions or combinations of elements and data is recorded by well. Creating an assay design for a plate-based technology includes the creation of one or more plate templates to the general assay procedure outlined in Design a New Assay.

When you create an assay design, you choose the assay type up front and then can customize a specific design to match your experiment data. There are built in assay types for several plate-based instruments, which include corresponding built in default plate layouts; you can also customize the General assay type to interpret plate-based data and associate it with well information.

The assay design process differs somewhat for these two options, but in both cases, Plate Templates are created and customized to describe how to interpret the plate data.
